HC Deb 05 June 1935 vol 302 cc1856-7
31. Mr. HALES(for Mr. HALLCAINE)

asked the Minister of Transport whether, taking the accidents since the start of the year, he can state the numbers caused by those drivers who have passed the driving test of his own Department; and whether arrangements will be made to secure this information for all future accidents?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

A system of voluntary tests for those who did not hold a licence before the 1st April, 1934, came into operation on 16th March last, and the tests were made compulsory only four days ago. The collection of the figures for which my hon. Friend asks would therefore seem premature.

32. Mr. HALES(for Mr. HALLCAINE)

asked the Minister of Transport the present average delay between an application for a driving test and the issue of the necessary certificate; and whether he is satisfied that the present staff is sufficient to deal with the number of applications which will now be coming forward as a result of the driving test being compulsory as from the current week?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

The answer to the first part of the question is 10 days. With regard to the second part of the question, it will, of course, always be necessary to adjust staff to the requirements of the situation.
