HC Deb 04 June 1935 vol 302 cc1697-8
Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to the speech of M. Hambros, the president of the Swedish Riksdag, on the 500th anniversary of the Swedish parliament; and whether he will communicate to the Swedish Government our appreciation of, and sympathy with, their defence of liberty, law and democracy?

The PRIME MINISTER

I presume the right hon. and gallant Member refers to the speech made by M. Hambro, President of the Norwegian Storting, at the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Swedish Reichstag, to which he was the Norwegian delegate. I have read the Press reports of this speech with interest and appreciation. As regards the second part of the question, I sent a telegram of congratulation on behalf of His Majesty's Government to the Swedish Prime Minister on 28th May, in which I referred to the valuable services which the Swedish Parliament had rendered for 500 years to the cause of constitutional liberty. A message of thanks and appreciation was sent to me by the Swedish Government on 29th May.
