HC Deb 29 July 1935 vol 304 c2298
46. Mr. MALLALIEU

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that both the civil authorities in the United Kingdom and in Northern Ireland have an equal right to call in Imperial troops to assist in maintaining order, but that no Minister is responsible to this House for the preservation of law and order, he will consider withdrawing Imperial troops from Northern Ireland?

The PRIME MINISTER

No, Sir.

Mr. MALLALIEU

Does the right hon. Gentleman think that it is a satisfactory state of affairs that while Great Britain has no control over the maintenance of law and order in Northern Ireland, British troops should be called out to clear up the mess?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am quite satisfied with the present position, and see no reason to change it.
