HC Deb 17 July 1935 vol 304 c1049
55. Mr. R. T. EVANS

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the firm of Messrs. Richard Thomas has decided to erect tinplate mills at Redbourne, Lincolnshire, and that it is proposed to transfer to these new works the output quotas now allotted to the firm's existing mills in West Wales; and what steps he is taking to prevent a transference that would contribute to creating in that district a new special area?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead)

The only reliable information on this subject is that contained in the statement made by the chairman of this company at its annual meeting on 15th July. I can assure the hon. Member that the Government appreciate the significance of such a development, but in view of the many considerations involved, the hon. Member will not expect me at the moment to make any statement on the subject.

Mr. EVANS

While thanking the hon. and gallant Member for his reply, will he give a definite assurance that the Government are not going to remain dumb witnesses of this tragedy?

Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

Is the Minister aware that the Government have the trump card, that they can recommend to the advisory committee that the tariff be withdrawn, and that will put an end to this ramp of the monopolists?

Lieut.-Commander AGNEW

Can the Minister say whether the putting into effect of the proposition in the question would result in an increased demand for metallic tin?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

The answer to the three supplementary questions is covered by my original answer. We do recognise the difficulties, but I cannot make a statement at the moment.
