HC Deb 17 July 1935 vol 304 c1041
35. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Attorney-General the present population of England and Wales per High Court judge and, for comparison, the figures for 1914 and for 1885?

Sir G. PENNY

I have been asked to reply. As figures are involved, with my hon. Friend's permission I will circulate the answer in the OFFICIAL REPORT. As there was no general census taken in the years referred to in the question my right hon. and learned Friend has based the calculations on the nearest census figures.

Following is the answer:

Number of Judges. Census Figures. Average.
1881 25,974,439 1,180,656
1885 22
1911 36,070,492 1,502,937
1914 24
1931 39,947,931 1,377,514
1935 29
