HC Deb 17 July 1935 vol 304 c1051
54. Captain STRICKLAND (for Mr. H. WILLIAMS)

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will institute an inquiry into the cost of living of the working classes, with a view to the establishment of a new basis of the index number of the cost of living?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

An inquiry for this purpose would necessarily involve a new collection of working-class family budgets. In view of the recent appointment of an Advisory Committee to inquire into the facts in relation to the diet of the people and to report as to any changes therein which appear desirable, my right hon. Friend proposes to defer a decision on this matter until the Committee have had an opportunity to present a report with regard to the first part of their terms of reference.
