asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that for the six eastern counties the weighted average of the percentage of farms of all sizes equipped with telephones is only 12 per cent.; and whether he will consider what steps he can take by increasing the free mileage radius or otherwise to procure an improvement of this figure?

I have no information to confirm the percentage figure quoted by my hon. and gallant Friend, but I fully share his desire to increase the use of the telephone service by farmers. The whole question of encouraging a wider use of the telephone service in rural areas is at present under active consideration.
