HC Deb 11 July 1935 vol 304 cc471-2
53. Major-General Sir ALFRED KNOX

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the fact that double-deck omnibuses carrying up to 60 or 70 passengers are allowed to travel 30 miles per hour in the most congested districts, he will consider some relaxation of the speed limit of 20 miles per hour at present imposed on goods vehicles with pneumatic tyres on all roads?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

The 20 miles per hour limit applies only to heavy goods vehicles, and I should have no grounds for asking Parliament to revise the limit of speed which tit fixed last year.

Sir A. KNOX

Is not this unfair in view of the fact that these vehicles are involved in fewer accidents than any other kind of vehicle?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I would not presume to comment on a decision of Parliament which was reached so recently.
