HC Deb 11 July 1935 vol 304 cc489-90
49. Sir W. SMITHERS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the possibility of investors being misled by the use of the word "bank" in the title of concerns which are not deposit banks, he will consider the advisability of amending the Companies' Act so as to ensure that the use of the word "bank" in the title of a company or firm shall necessitate conformity with defined conditions?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

The suggestion of my hon. Friend has been noted for in vestigation when the amendment of the Companies Act is under consideration.

Sir W. SMITHERS

If the President is not able to introduce legislation to amend the Companies Act, does he contemplate some other action to stop people taking advantage of an ignorant and gullible public? Is not some action possible?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Not that I know of.

Sir W. SMITHERS

Not by regulations?
