HC Deb 09 July 1935 vol 304 cc159-60
49. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been drawn to the case of Mr. Rosenblatt, a British subject resident in Liverpool, who wishes to pay a three months' visit to Palestine but cannot find the £60 demanded as security to ensure his return to this country; and whether he will, in the case of British subjects, cease demanding this security from visitors to Palestine?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald)

I am afraid that I see no reason for suggesting to the High Commissioner for Palestine that he should reconsider the regulation relating to the £60 deposit, which has, I understand, proved most effective in checking illegal immigration.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

What are these regulations? How is it that anybody called "Wedgwood" can get into Palestine without paying £60, and if you have a Jewish name you cannot? Is it a question of what class you go in the steamer, or is it a question of whether your name is Jewish or English?

Viscountess ASTOR

Is it not true that the right hon. and gallant Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme (Colonel Wedgwood) has made the name of "Wedgwood" a passport in all countries?

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is it a question of name or of rank whether a tax has to be paid?

Mr. MacDONALD

It applies whether you are Jewish or not.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Do the regulations not apply to non-Jews and only apply to Jews?
