§ 21. Mr. MORGANasked the President of the Board of Education how many elementary school classes there are with more than 50 pupils on the roll; and what progress is being made in reducing this number?
Mr. STANLEYOn 31st March, 1935, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 4,262 classes with over 50 children on the registers as compared with 6,194 on 31st March, 1934. These over-large classes have thus been reduced by 1,932 in the last year, or over 30 per cent. This follows on the reduction of 25 per cent. in the previous year, and these classes now form only 2.8 per cent. of the total number of elementary school classes.
