HC Deb 25 February 1935 vol 298 cc764-5
26. Mr. THORNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade the number of soft-timber standards imported from Canada from 1932 to the nearest available date in 1934; and whether the standards from Canada are the same cut and length as those imported from other countries, especially the Russian imports?

Dr. BURGIN

Imports of sawn soft wood (other than planed or dressed) from Canada in the years 1932, 1933 and 1934, were 216,000, 605,000 and 1,081,000 loads respectively, the load of 50 cubic feet being the official unit of quantity for the purpose of the trade returns. Particulars of imports of this and other classes of soft wood from the principal countries of supply during each of the last three years will be found in the issue of the "Accounts relating to Trade and Navigation of the United Kingdom" for December, 1934. I understand that there is some variation in the sizes in which timber is cut in different countries.
