HC Deb 21 February 1935 vol 298 cc513-4
21. Sir MURDOCH McKENZIE WOOD

asked the Home Secretary whether he has any figures showing how much money has been subscribed to the Irish Free State hospital sweepstakes; how much of the money has been allocated to hospitals; and how much of the money allocated has, in fact, been paid over to the hospitals?

Sir J. GILMOUR

On the basis adopted by the Royal Commission on Lotteries and Betting in Appendix IV of their final report, it is estimated that, including sellers' commission, approximately £44,900,000 has been subscribed to the 13 sweepstakes promoted by the Irish Hospitals Trust Limited up to and including that on the Cambridgeshire, 1934, and that, of this sum, £7,603,000 approximately has been allocated to hospitals. I have no information as regards the last part of the question.
