HC Deb 18 December 1935 vol 307 c1730
6. Mr. RHYS DAVIES

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the purpose of the meeting of the Council of the League of Nations which has been convened for 17th December, to discuss the question of Assyrian settlement?

Viscount CRANBORNE

The President of the Council Committee for settling the Assyrians in Iraq requested that a special meeting of the Council might be called for 17th December to consider various urgent points arising out of the Committee's report to the Council. The most important of these related to the constitution of a Trustee Board to undertake financial responsibility for the operation of settling the Assyrians in the Ghab area in Syria, and to carry out, in collaboration with the High Commissioner for Syria, the actual administration of the settlement. The meeting was duly convened, but has now been merged in the meeting of the Council subsequently convened for 18th December to consider the Italo-Abyssinian conflict.
