HC Deb 16 December 1935 vol 307 c1377
5. Mr. THURTLE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether the Government will suggest to the Government of India that they should, as a friendly gesture to organised political opinion in India, mark the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Indian National Congress by granting an amnesty to political prisoners whose cases appear suitable for such action?

Mr. BUTLER

No, Sir. I have nothing to add to the reply given to a similar question by the Member for Bow and Bromley (Mr. Lansbury) on 9th December.

Mr. THURTLE

Are not the Government interested in creating a better atmosphere in India?

Mr. BUTLER

The Government are interested in creating a better atmosphere. This matter is in the discretion of the Viceroy.
