asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of children between the ages of 12 and 14 years who were exempted from school attendance during the last 12 months, and the number of children between the ages of 14 and 15 years who continued in school attendance in higher grade advanced division and elementary schools, respectively?

The number of children between the ages of 12 and 14 who were exempted from school attendance during the year ended 31st July, 1935, was 5,188—2½ per cent. of the corresponding age block. At the end of the school year 1934–35 the number of children between the ages of 14 and 15 in voluntary attendance at public schools was approximately 23,000—33 per cent. of the corresponding age block. About 50 per cent. of the 23,000 were in higher grade and secondary schools 42 per cent. in advanced divisions of non-secondary schools, and 8 per cent. in primary schools.
