HC Deb 10 December 1935 vol 307 c706
4. Mr. LUNN

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has any statement to make as to our relations with the Irish Free State?

Mr. HACKING

There have been no recent developments in the position. I can assure the House that the question of the relations between the Irish Free State and this country is very present in the mind of my right hon. Friend. His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom will lose no opportunity of improving the relations between the two countries.

Mr. LUNN

Are the Department taking any steps to bring together the representatives of the Irish Free State Government and of our own Government to consider bringing about a settlement?

Mr. HACKING

I really cannot add anything to the answer I have given. It is sufficient to say at this moment that we shall lose no opportunity of bringing the two countries closer together.

Mr. BUCHANAN

In view of the change in the Cabinet positions, is it not time that a new effort were made by the new Gentleman in charge of this Department?
