HC Deb 10 December 1935 vol 307 cc710-1
64. Mr. BELLENGER

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department the total sum available from all sources for publicity for the British Industries Fair of 1936; and what part of this has been spent on advertising in British newspapers in the Dominions and Colonies?

Captain WALLACE

The total sum available to the Department of Overseas Trade from all sources for the purpose of meeting the cost of advertising and publicity for the forthcoming British Industries Fair is £12,500. I regret that it has not been possible to allocate any portion of this sum for the purchase of advertising space in overseas newspapers circulating in Empire or Foreign countries. I would, however, point out that an elaborate publicity campaign is conducted in overseas countries by means of a direct appeal to known buyers, in a series of letters written in their own language, by a world-wide display of posters and other publicity material, and through the activities of the officers of the Commercial Diplomatic, Trade Commissioner, and Consular Services.

Mr. BELLENGER

Can the hon. and gallant Member say why there has been this apparent neglect of the Empire in this matter, and will he endeavour to remedy this state of affairs?

Captain WALLACE

I do not admit that there has been any neglect. We consider that the money we have is laid out to the best advantage.
