HC Deb 01 August 1935 vol 304 c2832
61. Mr. GUY (for Sir W. BRASS)

asked the Minister of Transport whether he proposes to carry out any further experiments with a view to ensuring greater safety for pedestrians as junctions controlled by traffic lights?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Yes, Sir. The suggestion made by my hon. and gallant Friend that "Cross now" and "Don't cross" signals should be placed lower down on the standards is not satisfactory because it is desirable to avoid any possibility of pedestrians at or near signal posts obscuring the signal phases. I am, however, in touch with a number of highway authorities with a view to the carrying out of extensive experiments with signals showing definite indications to pedestrians when to cross.
