asked the Home Secretary the number of vacancies which have arisen in the higher positions of the Metropolitan Police during the last six months; and the number which have been filled by men who have served as constables?

Since 1st February, 1935, one vacancy has arisen in the Metropolitan Police Force in the rank of chief constable which was filled by the promotion of a superintendent who had served as a constable. Four vacancies have arisen in the rank of superintendent, one of which was filled by the promotion of a chief inspector who had served as a constable.
