HC Deb 16 April 1935 vol 300 cc1656-7
8. Mr. LYONS

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) the balance of trade between this country and the United States of America, showing in sterling values British exports and imports, and specifying the amount of tobacco purchases, for the year 1934;

(2) the amount of purchases of tobacco from Southern Rhodesia by this country for the year 1934?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Runciman)

My hon. and learned Friend will find particulars of the aggregate value of merchandise imported into and exported from this country in trade with the United States during 1934 on pages 184, 188 and 192 of the Trade and Navigation Accounts for January last. Particulars of the imports of tobacco during 1934 consigned from the United States and Southern Rhodesia are shown on page 40 of the issue of these accounts for December, 1934.

Mr. LYONS

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the establishment of a quota in order to increase our purchases from Southern Rhodesia?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I cannot answer that question without notice.
