HC Deb 15 April 1935 vol 300 c1603
52. Mr. BATEMAN

asked the Home Secretary whether in view of the growing feeling in this country that capital punishment should be abolished, he will state what recent applications have been made to his Department for a reconsideration of the question; and what the views of his Department are thereon?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I do not accept the implication in the first part of the question and nothing has come to my notice which would indicate that there has been any significant change of public opinion on this subject.

Viscountess ASTOR

Would my right hon. Friend take the opinion of prison governors throughout the world, who have reported that capital punishment does no good and has a very disastrous effect on the rest of the prisoners and prison officials?
