§ 5. Brigadier-General SPEARSasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any statement to make on the conditions under which the elec- 1128 tions for the Danzig Diet were held; and whether, as the suppression of opposition newspapers and propaganda by the Nazis are incompatible with the democratic constitution of the city, he will bring the matter before the Council of the League of Nations?
§ Mr. BALDWINNo, Sir. It is for the League High Commissioner at Danzig in the first instance to draw, if necessary, the attention of the Council of the League to the conditions under which the recent elections for the Danzig Diet were held.
§ Brigadier-General SPEARSWill the High Commissioner have the opportunity of doing so at the next council meeting?
§ Mr. BALDWINAs the hon. and gallant Member knows, I am not extraordinarily familiar with the procedure, but I should imagine so. It is his duty to make any report he thinks fit.
