HC Deb 29 November 1934 vol 295 cc1005-6
42. Sir A. KNOX

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can give the number of seats in the Legislative and Provincial Assemblies of India so far gained by the Congress party and by Indian Liberals?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Butler)

The final results of the elections to the Legislative Assembly are not yet available. According to the most recent information I have received the Congress have won 41 seats out of 94 reported results. I have no complete figures as to the present strength of the other communities and interests. There have been no recent elections to the Provincial Councils.

Sir A. KNOX

Is it not a fact that the Congress has won about 95 per cent. of the seats where their candidates stood?

Mr. BUTLER

I have told my hon. and gallant Friend that the Congress have won 41 seats. I prefer to make no further statement until we receive the final results after communication with India.

Mr. GEORGE GRIFFITHS

Can the hon. Member tell us the result of the Putney election to-day?
