§ 23. Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGEasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any figures to give as to the consumption of British barley by brewers; and whether they are carrying out their agreement to increase the proportion of British barley?
§ 22. Mr. LIDDALLasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer Whether he can furnish an estimate of the amount of British malting barley used by the brewers during the 12 months ended 31st July, 1934, and, for comparison, the amount during the corresponding period ending 31st July, 1933?
§ The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Duff Cooper)There are no official statistics available nor any means of making an official estimate of the amount of British malting barley used by brewers. As I recently stated, I have 995 no evidence that the brewers have failed to implement the undertaking they gave me in 1933, and they have informed me that they are anxious to buy as much British barley as possible; but the extent of their purchases depends, of course, on the amount of barley of a malting quality which is available in any particular season.
§ Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGEWill the hon. Gentleman arrange with the Chancellor of the Exchequer to consult British growers between now and when the Budget is introduced?
§ Mr. COOPERI do not think my hon. and gallant Friend can expect me to give an undertaking at this time.
§ Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGEWould the hon. Gentleman take into consideration any facts that are put before him?
§ Mr. COOPERMy right hon. Friend will take into consideration every fact that is put before him?
§ Mr. HANNONIs it not a fact that brewers have been doing everything they can to encourage the production of malt and barley in this country since the last Finance Act?
