HC Deb 28 November 1934 vol 295 cc842-3
48. Mr. MARTIN

asked the Secretary for Mines whether the oil section of the Mines Department has any information concerning the tonnage of synthetically produced oils imported into this country?

Mr. E. BROWN

During 1933, 756,183 gallons of benzole and 72,573 gallons of tar oil, creosote oil, anthracene oil and other heavy tar oils were imported into this country.

Mr. MARTIN

Can the hon. Gentleman say the source of origin of these imports, and, if possible, the approximate values of them?

Mr. BROWN

I cannot give the values, but the bulk of the benzole comes from France and of the others from the Netherlands.

Mr. MARTIN

Will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind the provision of plant at Billingham which can produce synthetic oil from our coal resources?
