HC Deb 28 November 1934 vol 295 cc848-9
42. Mr. STOREY (for Mr. ANSTRUTH ER-GRAY)

asked the Postmaster-General whether in view of continued delay in long-distance telephone calls after 7 p.m., he will now consider giving preference for express calls on payment of an extra charge?

Sir G. PENNY

I have been asked to reply. The service continues to improve and calls are now subject to delay on only a few long-distance routes after 7 p.m. My right hon. Friend hopes that the steps which are being taken further to improve the service on those routes will make it unnecessary to introduce a system of preferential calls.

Mr. STOREY

Is the hon. Member aware that important business calls have been terminated at the end of three minutes without the option of a further call, and can he take steps to obviate this?

Sir G. PENNY

There are very few of these, and the hon. Member is no doubt aware that the Postmaster-General is a most capable, efficient and businesslike man, who will get his Department into the highest state of efficiency.
