§ 38. Sir CHARLES OMANasked the First Commissioner of Works whether he will take measures to secure that the persistent hammering on the scaffolds outside the windows of the Library of this House should be as far as possible restricted during the hours after mid-day, when the Library is in continual use by Members?
§ The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)I regret that it is not possible to ensure that all hammering shall entirely cease after midday, and I think it would be in the general interest that the work should be allowed to progress and to finish as early as possible. Instructions are however being given that, as far as practicable, hammering shall be confined to the hours before 3 p.m. If, at other times, annoyance is caused, complaint should be made to the Superintendent of Works, Mr. Wilson, who will endeavour to arrange for its discontinuance.
§ Mr. THORNEDoes not the right hon. Gentleman realise that the continual hammering proves that the men are doing their work efficiently?
§ Mr. ORMSBY-GORECertainly, they are doing it extremely well.
§ Mr. TINKERCan the right hon. Gentleman say when it is expected that the work will be completed?
§ Mr. ORMSBY-GORENot without notice.
