HC Deb 28 November 1934 vol 295 cc846-7
8. Mr. COCKS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the orders for aeroplane engines placed by Germany in this country; whether he can state how many engines have been ordered and how many have been supplied; and whether His Majesty's Government propose to take any action in the matter?

Mr. EDEN

The number of aeroplane engines of United Kingdom manufacture exported during the 10 months ended the 31st October, 1934, and registered as consigned to Germany was 96. As regards the last part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the replies given by my right hon. Friends the Foreign Secretary, and the Lord President of the Council on the 14th and 16th May last, respectively.

Mr. COCKS

In view of the situation, cannot the Government do something to prevent Germany being rearmed from this country?

Mr. EDEN

There is nothing whatever illegal about the transaction.

Mr. WILMOT

Does the Lord Privy Seal think it is in the interests of this country that aeroplane engines should be supplied to Germany?

44. Mr. COCKS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will give particulars of the number of aeroplane engines exported from this country to Germany this year?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Dr. Burgin)

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to him to-day by my right hon. Friend the Lord Privy Seal.

Mr. COCKS

May I ask whether the President of the Board of Trade will circularise these firms pointing out that it is undesirable in the public interest that Germany should be supplied with these engines?

Mr. O'CONNOR

Does not the fact that there is this export of civil aeroplane parts to Germany indicate the great difficulty which exists for this country to try to control the private manufacture of armaments?
