HC Deb 28 November 1934 vol 295 cc841-2
43. Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is satisfied that the trade and financial agreements lately made between Britain and Germany are operating satisfactorily and in the best interests of both countries?

Lieut.-Colonel J. COLVILLE (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

The Anglo-German Transfer Agreement of 4th July has operated satisfactorily. The Exchange Agreement of 10th August is no longer in operation, and the Payments Agreement of 1st November is of too recent date for its results to be assessed.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is a so-called international conference sitting at present in London for the purpose of inaugurating a campaign for an economic boycott of Germany, and does he think that is in the interests of his agreement and of British trade and the British unemployed?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

I know nothing of this conference except what I have seen in the Press. It is entirely unofficial. I think that any pronouncement on the part of the Government would indicate that too much importance is attached to its activities.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

Will my hon. and gallant Friend consult with the right hon. Gentleman the Home Secretary with a view to restricting these visas on the passports of foreigners who come here for the purpose of disturbing our domestic relations and international trade with Germany or anyone else?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

That is another matter.
