Major MILLSasked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the fact that the importation of eggs and egg substances in forms other than in shell was so increased during the six months ending 30th September last as to nullify the effect of the reduction in the number of eggs imported in shell which he was able to secure during that period, he will now say if it is proposed to take any action to remedy this?
§ The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Elliot)Gross imports of eggs not in shell during the six months to 30th September last totalled 391,400 cwt., as compared with 386,990 cwt. in the corresponding period of 1933, when imports were lower than for several years, and very substantially lower than in 1932. The arrangement for the regulation of imports of eggs in shell during the period in question was on the basis of a standstill. Total imports of eggs in shell in fact showed a decrease which, although small, was not entirely offset by the increase in imports of eggs not in shell. The question of the regulation of imports of eggs not in shell will be considered in the light of the report of the Egg and Poultry Reorganisation Commission.
