HC Deb 22 November 1934 vol 295 c236
14. Mr. DONNER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Treasury have examined the financial aspects of the White Paper proposals in regard to the future constitution of India; and, if so, what conclusions they have reached?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Duff Cooper)

The financial aspects of the White Paper proposals were examined in consultation with the Treasury at the time when they were framed; the conclusions reached were those embodied in the White Paper, for which His Majesty's Government as a whole were, of course, responsible.

Mr. DONNER

In view of the importance of this matter, will the House be informed more completely of the conclusions of the committee?

Mr. COOPER

The conclusions were contained in the White Paper.

35. Mr. DONNER

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is now in a position to give an assurance that a meeting of the Chamber of Princes will be called prior to the Debate on the report of the Joint Select Committee in this House?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Sir Samuel Hoare)

I am unable at present to add anything to the answer given to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Wycombe (Sir A. Knox) on the 12th November.

Mr. DONNER

Is it not a fact that the Chancellor and the Standing Committee of the Chamber of Princes have made a request for an early meeting?

Sir S. HOARE

No, Sir; so far as my information goes that is not the case.
