HC Deb 08 November 1934 vol 293 cc1277-8
66. Mr. NORTH

asked the Secretary for Mines what quantity of British coal has been purchased by Finland since the signing of the Anglo-Finnish trade agreement; how this amount compared with that purchased during a similar period in the previous year and, approximately, what proportion it is of the total purchases by Finland of coal during such period?

Mr. E. BROWN

The coal provisions of the Anglo-Finnish Trade Agreement operated from 1st December, 1933. Imports of United Kingdom coal into Finland in the nine months December, 1933-August, 1934, the latest period for which figures are available, amounted to 559,511 metric tons, which was 78.6 per cent. of the total imports of coal in that period. Figures of imports for the corresponding period in 1932–33 are not available, but a fair guide to the quantity can be obtained from the statistics of British coal exported to Finland in that period which amounted to 320,880 statute tons.

Lieut.-Colonel J. SANDEMAN ALLEN

Can the hon. Gentleman say what is the percentage of coal agreed to in the Anglo-Finnish Trade Agreement

Mr. BROWN

Yes, 75 per cent.
