HC Deb 31 May 1934 vol 290 c351
43. Mr. H. STEWART

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether an agreement has yet been reached for the purchase by the Soviet of Scottish herring in the present season?

Lieut.-Colonel J. COLVILLE (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

Yes, Sir. I understand the Soviet purchasing authorities have agreed to the purchase of 70,000 barrels of herring at a price of 27s. 3d. a barrel.

Mr. STEWART

Can my hon. and gallant Friend say if that is likely to be the only bargain made this year, or may we hope that another supplementary agreement may be made?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

I cannot do more than say that I hope that it is only the beginning of further purchases under the agreement, and it should be recognised that there were no herring at all purchased last year.

Sir N. STEWART SANDEMAN

Is that a paying price, may I ask?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

Prices must be settled between buyer and seller. The price is 2s. 3d. more than the last price obtained.
