HC Deb 18 May 1934 vol 289 cc2039-40
7. Mr. DINGLE FOOT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has considered the copy sent him of a resolution passed by the Dundee Corporation urging that as from the 1st July the maintenance of all persons who are to come under Part II of the Unemployment Bill should be a national and not a local liability; whether he has also considered a similar resolution passed by the Glasgow corporation; and what action, if any, he proposes to take?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer has considered the two resolutions to which the hon. Member refers but, as he informed the hon. Member for Stratford (Mr. Groves) on the 3rd May, it is not possible to anticipate the relief which local authorities will receive under the Unemployment Bill.

Mr. FOOT

Does not my hon. Friend appreciate that the restoration of the cuts will lead to a demand for an increase of relief?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Many things lead to demands.
