1. Mr. DAVID GRENFELL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the attention of the League of Nations has been drawn to the present Japanese military occupation of China's four north-eastern provinces, known as Manchuria and Jehol, with a view to considering if this occupation is compatible with Article 1 of the Nine-Power Treaty and Article 10 of the Covenant, as interpreted in the League of Nations Assembly Report of 24th February, 1933?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir John Simon)

Yes, Sir. This matter was fully discussed at Geneva in 1932 and 1933 as a result of the appeal of the Chinese Government to the League of Nations in connexion with the Manchurian dispute, and the Assembly in their resolution of the 24th February, 1933, recommended that a settlement of the dispute should be sought On the basis of the principles set forth in the Articles to which the hon. Member refers.
