HC Deb 27 March 1934 vol 287 cc1799-800
47. Mr. OSWALD LEWIS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how soon he hopes to be able to remove the existing embargo on foreign loans with a view to assisting in the revival of the overseas trade of this country?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Neville Chamberlain)

I fear that it is not possible at present for me to add to the answer which I gave to my hon. Friend on the 9th November last.

Mr. LEWIS

Could the right hon. Gentleman take the House into his confidence so far as to say what is the principal object in continuing this embargo?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I should have to have notice of that question.

Mr. BOOTHBY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when he may be in a position to make a full statement to the House upon the reasons governing the policy of the Government on this question?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

At a suitable opportunity.
