HC Deb 21 March 1934 vol 287 cc1212-3
16. Commander LOCKER-LAMPSON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air how many towns possess licences for municipal aerodromes; and how many civil aviation clubs are in existence?

Sir P. SASSOON

As regards the first part of the question, 17 towns have acquired sites which are now licensed as aerodromes, although in some cases the corporation is not the actual licensee. As regards the second part of the question, there are in Great Britain 18 subsidised flying clubs and, so far as I am aware, some 35 others.

Mr. GLOSSOP

Will the right hon. Gentleman circulate the names of the towns?

Sir P. SASSOON

I will consider that.

Mr. D. GRENFELL

Is there any difficulty in obtaining licences? Is there not a considerable number of municipalities who would like to obtain licences for sites, but have not been able to do so?

Sir P. SASSOON

There is no difficulty in getting licences if the sites are suitable.

Mr. GRENFELL

Is it not a fact that some suitable sites have been obtained but have not yet been approved?

Sir P. SASSOON

I do not know of suitable sites that have not been approved.

Commander LOCKER-LAMPSON

Are not the regulations rather arbitrary? Might they not be modified?

Sir P. SASSOON

I do not think so.
