38. Duchess of ATHOLLasked the Secretary of State for India if he can now lay upon the Table of the House any rules made by provincial governments which limit the discretion of the judges of a provincial high court in appointing judges to the lower courts?
§ The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Butler)The information which, at the instance of the Noble Lady the Government of India have been asked to supply, is still awaited. As the collection of the information involved a reference to the local governments, some time was inevitably required for its compilation. The Government of India are again being addressed on the subject.
Duchess of ATHOLLDoes the hon. Member realise that it is over three months since I first put down this question and that the answer has an important bearing on a statement made by an important witness. Will the hon. Member endeavour to expedite the obtaining of the information?
§ Mr. BUTLERI would remind the Noble Lady that we have sent this question and we are again addressing the Government of India on this subject, but the information has to be collected from the local governments and the central government, and then forwarded here. Directly the information arrives it will be forwarded to the Noble Lady.
§ Mr. BUTLERCertainly.
