HC Deb 14 March 1934 vol 287 c352
27. Sir P. GOFF

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the fact that large sales of herring have not resulted from the Russian Trade Agreement, he will consider the advisability of a Government export bounty of 2s. 6d. per barrel to stimulate the export of herring to Russia?

Captain Sir GEORGE BOWYER

I have been asked to reply. My right hon. Friend is satisfied that the absence of any large sale of herring to Russia since the conclusion of the agreement is largely due to the fact that the stocks of herring in this country are virtually exhausted. He is afraid that the suggestion put forward by my hon. Friend is, in any case, not one which the Government could entertain.
