HC Deb 14 March 1934 vol 287 c347
1. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is able to make any statement with reference to the situation in Austria; and whether any further information has been received from the Austrian Government with regard to the summoning of a special meeting of the Council of the League of Nations to consider the position or whether that has been abandoned?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir John Simon)

In reply to the first part of the question, I would refer to the answer given yesterday to the right hon. and gallant Gentleman, the Member for Newcastle-under-Lyme (Colonel Wedgwood). In reply to the second part of the question, the Austrian Government have made no recent statement regarding the intention which they annouced some weeks ago of appealing to the League of Nations.

Mr. MANDER

Is my right hon. Friend being kept informed of the conversations that are now going on in Rome?

Sir J. SIMON

They have only just begun. I understand that the visit to Rome is to discuss the economic situation. I have no doubt that our Ambassador will do his best to keep me informed.
