HC Deb 27 June 1934 vol 291 c1114
20. Major CARVER

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether in view of the fact that the centenary of the great fire at the House of Commons takes place on 16th October this year, he will consider placing a memorial recording this occurrence in St. Stephen's Hall for the information of the public?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I am of the opinion that public funds should not be expended on a memorial of this kind, as there are already several pictures of the fire in the lower corridor. If, however, Any proposal were put forward to provide such a memorial out of moneys privately subscribed, I should certainly be prepared to give the matter consideration.
