HC Deb 14 June 1934 vol 290 cc1870-1
6. Major JESSON

asked the Home Secretary whether he will introduce legislation whereby all appointments, promotions, punishments, and transfers of men by the chief constable of a county police force shall be sumbitted by him to a standing joint committee for confirmation?

Sir J. GILMOUR

No, Sir. I should not be prepared to propose to Parliament any change of that kind.

Major JESSON

Does not the right hon. Gentleman consider that if there were some kind of supervision over the decisions and judgments of chief constables it would lead to a greater feeling of security in the rank and file of the police, and would do away with any suggestion of favouritism or victimisation?

Mr. STONES

Is this not a chief cause of the trouble—

HON. MEMBERS

"Order!"

Mr. SPEAKER

That is purely a matter of opinion.
