HC Deb 14 June 1934 vol 290 cc1872-3
67. Sir GIFFORD FOX

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the large exportations of wheat from Argentina; whether these exports are in conformity with the undertaking by Argentina to limit her exports of wheat for the year ending 1st August to 110,000,000 bushels; and, if not, what action will be taken by the other Powers interested?

Dr. BURGIN

I am given to understand that the exports of wheat from the Argentine have already exceeded the quota for the period ending 1st August next which was allotted to her under the agreement concluded last year between the principal exporting countries. Discussions on the whole question of the attitude of Argentina to the Wheat Agreement have been going on for some weeks between Argentina and the other principal exporting countries and are still continuing.

Sir G. FOX

May I ask whether as the agreement with regard to wheat has been broken by Argentina it is not desirable to have discussions with Argentina to enable a wheat quota scheme to be introduced?
