HC Deb 12 June 1934 vol 290 c1525
22. Mr. THOMAS COOK

asked the Minister of Labour the position of unemployment in the rural areas of Norfolk, with particular reference to the labour available for hoeing sugar-beet?

Mr. HUDSON

The numbers of workpeople registered for employment at local offices in rural areas in Norfolk on the 4th June were 1,545 men, 299 women and 81 juveniles, making a total of 1,925. Of these, 98 were considered suitable for sugar-beet hoeing.

Captain HEILGERS

Can the Minister say whether any labour has been imported from outside areas?

Mr. HUDSON

I understand that in one case in Norfolk a request was made for men to be brought from Durham, and steps were taken to comply with the request.
