§ 49. Mr. HALL-CAINEasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can make any further statement as to the final amount which it will be necessary to provide from public funds to complete the purchase of the Codex Sinaiticus?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINI understand that nearly £50,000 has already been contributed by the public towards the £93,000 which, as was stated in reply to my hon. Friend the Member for South Kensington (Sir W. Davison) on the 8th February, was temporarily advanced by the Treasury for this purpose. It is not yet possible to estimate what will be the ultimate net liability of the Exchequer as contributions are still being received.
