HC Deb 25 July 1934 vol 292 cc1767-8
22. Mr. EMMOTT

asked the President of the Board of Trade the value of complete typewriters and of parts of typewriters, respectively, imported in the six months ended 30th June, 1934?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Dr. Burgin)

During the six months ended June, 1934, the declared value of the total imports into the United Kingdom of complete typewriters was £190,200 and of parts of typewriters £31,715.

Mr. PIKE

In view of the figures just quoted by the hon. Member, is he prepared to consider the possibility of reassembling the reply which he gave to the hon. Member for South Croydon (Mr. H. Williams) on Monday?

Dr. BURGIN

The figures which I have given show the accuracy of the reply.

Mr. HERBERT WILLIAMS

Did not the reply indicate that the bulk of the typewriters were imported for the purpose of assembly in this country and not as complete typewriters?

Dr. BURGIN

I was asked what other process could happen to a typewriter after being imported, and I replied "Assembling."
