asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office how many officers of the Army are in receipt of a double forage allowance; how many of these are actually in possession of two horses used for military purposes; and what the total amount paid out for this double allowance was for the last 12 months?

Approximately 900 officers draw forage allowance, or forage, in respect of two horses. All these officers are actually in possession of two horses used for military purposes. The total amount paid for the past 12 months was about £35,000.
