HC Deb 18 July 1934 vol 292 c1096
33. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the National Livestock Committee have submitted any reports to him; and, if so, whether such reports are available for hon. Members?

Dr. BURGIN

I understand the hon. Member to refer to the Meat Advisory Committee appointed in December, 1932, under the chairmanship of Lord Linlithgow. It has not been necessary for the committee to submit any informal reports.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Was not this committee appointed to examine the distribution side of meat, and were not reports issued by it to the Department?

Dr. BURGIN

The Department is in very frequent touch with this committee, but ray hon. Friend must not misunderstand the nature of the committee. It is a trade committee, not a consumers' committee. It is a committee to deal with different sections of the trade, under regulations and restrictions. So far as I know, when the committee require any information they communicate with the Department, but that has been formal and not in the nature of a report.

Mr. WILLIAMS

In the course of the inquiries by the committee were not some discoveries made and some submissions made to the Department, and may I ask whether such submissions can be made available for Members of the House?

Dr. BURGIN

Perhaps the hon. Member will allow me to look into that matter, because it goes a good deal further than his question. I should like to consider whether I can in any way assist the hon. Member.
