HC Deb 16 July 1934 vol 292 cc781-2
48. Mr. DAGGAR

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the conditions under which the police have to perform their duties, he is prepared to authorise the wearing of open-necked shirts without a tunic during the present heat-wave, or to permit any departure from the wearing of full-dress uniform?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The uniform used by the Metropolitan Police has been care-

fully thought out to meet the vagaries of the English climate after hearing the views of the men themselves, and the Commissioner sees no reason to think that any change of the kind suggested is necessary at present. Arrangements are made in extremes of weather—either of heat or cold—to relieve men on fixed points at more frequent intervals.
